ça ne prend pas un astrologue ni un astronome pour le savoir...

il n'y a qu'à avoir ce qui se passe au bercail pour S'inquiété...

avec les deux larrons à la sécurité publique et l'éducation qui font les autruches c'est encore plus in... non j'ai rien dit, mieux vaut qu'ils n'interviennent pas pour éviter d'aggraver les problèmes....

Et ça va si bien au SPVM... ça fait la file pour démissionner... peut-on les blâmer?

The woman sits at a table in the basement of a Montreal shelter for women fleeing domestic violence. Walking an intervention worker through the extreme abuse she’s suffered, she’s overtaken by emotions.

She drops her head to the table and lets out loud sobs. Her hands grip the wooden chair.

“The sounds come back to me, the fear comes back to me,” the woman says. “It’s so unfair.”

The worker reminds her she’s safe. It’s normal to feel overwhelmed, she says. “Just breathe,” she repeats. “You are OK.”

Sitting off to the side in street clothes are two female Montreal police recruits, 21 and 23 years old. Straight-faced, they’ll later say it took everything they had to fight back tears.

The recruits are spending the day at the shelter as part of a new five-week “immersion” training the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) is having all new officers do. The goal is to help them understand the issues they will face in the city.

On the day they visit, in mid-October, all but two of the shelter’s 24 rooms are occupied. They’re reserved for women, but also their children.

Domestic violence was chosen as one of the training program’s five main themes because of the magnitude of the problem.

Last year alone, three women were killed by their partners in the city. Montreal police received 37 calls per day about the issue — more than 13,400 calls over the course of the year.

On average, the police force handles 7,000 domestic violence cases a year.

“Domestic violence will now be part of your daily life,” police commander Anouk St-Onge told the recruits while prepping them on the issue.

“It touches everyone: Every neighbourhood in Montreal, every social class, every profession.”

“That’s why there are so many murders,” the young woman says, not mincing her words. “Because the victim never calls the police in the moment, since the police don’t help us anyway.”

The 20 recruits going through the training are gathered in the cafeteria at police headquarters, watching video testimony of a young victim of domestic violence.

Laio Auger, a lieutenant detective with the SPVM’s domestic violence unit, warns them the video is going to be a gut punch.

In it, the woman says her partner abused her hundreds of times. After fleeing their apartment in 2018, police kept her in their cruiser for two hours. They tried to force her to file a complaint, but she wasn’t ready.
